Innovative Custom Build: A Smart Space Heater That Communicates

In the realm of DIY tech projects, custom-built computers often serve as both functional tools and personal expressions of creativity. Recently, I embarked on an ambitious project to design a highly customized PC setup, driven by specific performance requirements and aesthetic preferences. Along the way, I incorporated an unexpected, fun feature: the ability for my space heater to communicate with me.

The Genesis of the Build

My initial goal was straightforward: assemble a powerful machine centered around a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics card. I aimed to select a motherboard, case, and power supply with ample room for future expansions—particularly, the potential addition of another high-end GPU down the line.

However, once I saw how well two GPUs could complement my workflow, I decided to add a second RTX 3090 Ti, primarily to enhance performance. This decision was based on extensive benchmarking using Runpod, where I evaluated 13 different GPUs to determine the most cost-effective option for my particular tasks, primarily working with the VibeVoice-7B model at the time.

Benchmarking Insights and Hardware Choices

In my evaluations, I considered various models: the newer RTX 5090 and 4090, which offered faster speeds, but the cost difference didn’t justify the incremental gains. Interestingly, the B200 was slower despite expectations. Ultimately, I selected two 3090 Ti cards because they provided the best balance of performance and value.

One of my design constraints was to minimize the number of fans. I prefer a clean aesthetic; too many fans resemble a car with numerous exhaust pipes—overly busy and cluttered. As a result, I opted for a setup that relies on as few cooling fans as possible, prioritizing visual simplicity.

Reflecting on Hardware Choices

Looking back, I regret opting for the 3090 Ti instead of investing in a professional-grade RTX 4000 series GPU. At the time, I was drawn to the size and perceived power of the 3090 Ti, but in hindsight, spending an additional $500 could have provided more future-proof performance. Nonetheless, the current setup serves me well.

Practical Uses and Unique Features

While I still utilize cloud computing for coding and development tasks, my custom-built machine has been invaluable for various creative processes, including text-to-speech (TTS), word alignment, image generation, and initial drafts of video production. Notably, I added a fun, unconventional feature: a space heater capable of “talking” to me.

This interactive element has added a layer of personality to my setup, blending utility with a bit of humor and novelty.

Final Thoughts

This project exemplifies how a blend of performance considerations, aesthetic preferences, and a touch of creativity can lead to a uniquely personal computing experience. By integrating communication capabilities into a space heater, I’ve also demonstrated how tech projects can go beyond traditional boundaries, making everyday devices more engaging and integrated into our workflows.
